Candid images showed my mother and father in their environment, alone or relating to one another, or at a favorite restaurant, which was a ritual at 5:30 PM on a Saturday night. Since I was shooting color negative film, it was processed with 4 x 6 prints made so I could study the images after my visits. The photographs began to capture the subtle changes taking place in my father as he entered his mid-70's. The physical changes began with a decline in Dad's memory. He seemed in a fog, unable to focus on reading his much-loved history books, staring at them. He once got lost coming home. He lost interest in creating things in his special room where he worked on stained glass projects. Finally diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, I helped my mother find caretakers to come into their home, as she could not manage with the daily chores without the support of Dad. Incontinence occurred, along with mental decline. I finally convinced Mom that having someone come in 3 days a week was a good idea. What would happen if she became incapacitated, I asked. Eventually a full-time live in person was needed, as my father had to be lifted and bathed daily. Photographs can tell us a lot, and I am used to "reading" them. I remember one image that particularly stood out, informing me of what was to come. My father, laying asleep on his recliner, was being covered by a caretaker, one day. I was in the middle of photographing him in the living room in the late afternoon Florida light with Dad's painting of Christ behind him from the 1940's. A blue blanket raised by the caretaker, hung in the air above Dad and became a blur during the 1 second exposure. And for some reason, the body of the caretaker was missing her lower legs, as if she were levitating. She became an apparition, and the blue blanket a shroud, warning me that my father would not be long for the earth. About four months after the photo was taken, in April 1999, my father passed away. Broaching the subject with my mother regarding a funeral and burial was a topic I had to address. My parents had no plan for a burial site or cemetery, as it seemed to be taboo. At the kitchen table one morning I brought it up with my mother, already having checked out a cemetery and what the burial choices would be. Having breakfast at the kitchen table, I talked about the cemetery and decisions about three burial choices. One, Dad could be put in a crypt above ground. Two, he could be cremated. Three, he could be buried. Her response was that he would not want to be cremated, as he had been a NYC fireman and would not want to be burned up. Being buried in the ground was not a choice, as she did not like being confined in the ground. And so she decided the choice was in a crypt above ground. After choosing this, I told her that they could purchase two places in a crypt above ground and she could choose being placed side to side or top to bottom. Not hesitating, she said "Top to bottom, with me on the top" as her choice. At that point she started to laugh wildly, as the sexual innuendo was clear. Tears streaming down my face, I joined her. My mother and I often had moments like that when her sense of humor played into our conversations. Even though these photographs were personal, I began to think it important to share them, as they spoke about Alzheimer's disease. I decided to do so and approached the Albuquerque Museum of Art in New Mexico, for an exhibition. It took 3 years to develop approximately 50 images which were shown in January of 2003. My friend Judy Natal encouraged me to do a forty page catalog of the work with medical facts, along with interviews from my mother, father and myself. All of this information might help someone who is trying to understand the disease, allowing empathy and understanding for everyone involved. Since the time I produced this body work, Alzheimer's information has undoubtedly changed. And I look forward to seeing it eradicated.
